Thoughts on Location No 9

Cessnock, Hunter Region, New South Wales

The only thing Dean has to say about our short stay in Cessnock is:  “There’s no surf and I can’t wait to get back to the coast where I’ll have a 20 metre walk to the beach.”

To be honest, the only thing that bought us here was a site at the Big4 Valley Vineyard Tourist Park, more accurately, the nonavailability of sites on the coast.  Being peak holiday season we were unable to book into any other park and thought it was not the best time of year to try camping at either a national park (that is most likely as full as the caravan parks), or on the roadside.

No!  No!  No!  Staying in a caravan park was the best option, it was simply a case of finding one with a site available.

Upon arrival it’s easy to see where the park gets its name.  Surrounding and throughout the park are vines abundant with juvenile grapes waiting for the weather to dry out so they can ripen.  The lady in the office told me they were Merlot grapes that are ready for harvest in late January.  She also said when ripe it’s a case of help yourself, however, they are not that nice and do create an awfully upset stomach so parents are warned.

We found ourselves on and ensuite site, convenient that it was the most expensive and the only one available, however the condition of the ensuite was less than desirable and I chose not to use it.

The location of the park is away from the main street and therefore in a desirable, quiet area of Cessnock and it is good to see many signs around the park that the new management are spending money on upgrading the facilities.

It might be a very nice place to visit once all the renovations are completed.  I only hope that, after spending money on the construction of chalets, there is also money to spend on upgrading the ensuites and van sites.

We now have a house sitting job at Lake Macquarie for the next three weeks.  In doing so we will also be looking after the home owners pet and enjoying the Hunter Region for an extended period of time.
