Thoughts on Location No 16
Mallacoota, East Gippsland, Victoria
We arrived in Mallacotta under the impression that the park we selected would be able to accommodate us for two nights, possible three, after all it’s not peak season. What it is though is the shoulder season and are now aware that means ‘peak’ season for those who avoid the school holiday periods.
The park we wanted to stay in offer ‘pay for three weeks – stay for four’ and this meant we couldn’t stay for two nights. We could have stayed for one, but setting up and moving the following day can be a hassle. So we moved a little further down the street to another park where we were able to stay two night, or three nights if we changed our mind and wanted to stay longer.
As usual, it rained and this limited what we could do so we chose to move on after the second night.
I can’t help thinking it would have been nice to explore more of an area rich in national parks and walking tracks, particularly Croajingolong National Park. Perhaps another time.
We did have a coupe of hours of sunshine that permitted us to take a drive to Betka Beach and Quarry Beach were we took a short walk and did a little exploring.
We are now at Lakes Entrance – a little closer to Melbourne, our immediate destination, and guess what – it’s raining here too.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention: It is wonderful to finally leave New South Wales behind and start exploring another state of Australia.
