Farewell St Helens

Final Thought on Location No 23

St Helens, East Coast, Tasmania

It’s hard to believe we left St Helens behind yesterday and are now camped a mere 120 kilometres (55 miles) down the road. Quite unexpectedly, the replacement sitters arrived early (seeking dry land I’m guessing) and we firmly grasped the opportunity to depart four days ahead of schedule.

It’s was almost sad to say goodbye to the gorgeous little house we’ve called home for the last two months, but to be honest, both of us have had itchy feet for the last week or so and had been counting down the days while singing our favourite song:

All jokes aside, we had a lovely time venturing throughout the far northern reaches of Tasmania.  Take a look at Dean’s Surfing page, he certainly had more surf than he expected just a short drive down the road from St Helens at Scamander and Dark Hollow.

He also had a couple of days fishing.

I attempted to join him, but I didn’t last long. My patience was absent so I just took photos of Dean on the old rickety jetty.

We are now looking forward to exploring other areas of this beautiful island and some of the places we are excited about visiting include:

• Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay (where we are now)
• Tasman National Park
• Maria Island and Bruny Island
• Mount Field National Park
• Lake St Clair National Park and Cradle Mountain
• Walls of Jerusalem National Park
• The Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park

Beyond that, we will stop over in Hobart for a few days on our way around and finally head to the north-west corner before working our way back to Devonport, where we board the ferry and head back to the mainland towards the end of May.

The next 26 days are going to be busy, full of sight-seeing, bushwalking and natural wonders aplenty.

I just hope we don’t run out of time.
