Devonport, North West Coast, Tasmania

Our last port of call before heading back to the mainland.

Mersey Bluff Lighthouse
Mersey Bluff Lighthouse

Devonport is the major regional centre of the north western part of the Tasmania and it is sad to admit that reaching Devonport meant our Tasmanian adventure had come to an end. We have had a fantastic time touring around the island and certainly hope this is not the last time we have the pleasure of doing so.

We stayed at the Mersey Bluff Caravan Park nestled at the foot of Mersey Bluff itself, a terrific spot to watch the setting sun as it turned out, also where you find a wonderful lighthouse with striking vertical stripes on the seaward side. (The other side of the lighthouse is all white.)

We spent two nights watching the sun set on the water, something we don’t get to see living on the east coast of Australia. We certainly have ample opportunities to watch the sun rising across the ocean, so watching the day end with the sun disappearing into the water beyond the horizon is a treat.

As our adventure continues and we eventually find ourselves in Western Australia, we’ll have more ocean sunsets than we will know what to do with.

But in the meantime, here’s a selection of the sunset photos we took in Tasmania.

By the time you read this we will be aboard the Spirit of Tasmania and cruising somewhere in the Bass Strait, heading back to Melbourne, and from there we are heading to another house sitting job we’ve been offered near Jervis Bay on the south coast of New South Wales. Somewhere for us to hunker down for the winter.

  1. Just catching up on your past photos. Amazing photo of the moon .
While we were in Melbourne we caught up with friends of friends who travelled over from Devonport on the 23rd with their caravan and bikes, Noel and Cathy. Maybe you met them on your trip They are heading north away from the cold . Your next 3 months sound idyllic just as in St Helens.

    1. Oh Coral,

I love the Moon and if I had my way, I’d post photos of it all the time.

  2. Nice! I used to live in Devonport, many decades ago.
Good to see you’re happy campers and your adventure is a grand one!

  3. I quite like that lighthouse. Very attractive, and what’s more – so easy to get to! (Three weeks and counting!!)

  4. Firstly, Clare, the photos are stunning. Wow. Just wow.
Secondly, I find I’m drawn just a teensy bit more to sunsets than to sunrises. I have some rather exquisite views of both where I live, but there’s an invisible tug to the light of the closing of a day. Maybe as a photographer you’ll know what I mean? It’s a different type of sunlight entirely.
And lastly, how exciting to have a house sitting job! I hope it ends up being a warm and inviting port in the storm of winter weather.

    1. Thanx Shelley,

I just love a great sunset and this was one of only a few times I’ve been blessed to see the sun setting over the ocean. It was lovely standing there, watching the light fade, waiting for it to get dark. I love the photo Dean took at the waters edge, but then I’m a sentimental purple lover. Our next house sitting job is our third so far, and it will be our longest – just over three months – but with the promise of a fireplace (to keep me warm) and short drive to the beach (for my seal to surf) we couldn’t resist.

Still picturing your perfect kitchen sink πŸ™‚

  5. What a great shot of the moon up close and personal – and “alas” leaving that wonderful adventure of Tasmania – it was certainly full of chilly adventure for you both. Western Australia!! I’ll never catch up to you – I finally picked up my van and am heading of tonight for my maiden trip all the way to local Coolum. Not leaving till Sunday afternoon though and staying till late Monday as I have college on Monday night at Nambour. – I will report back on my short adventure later in the week – Until then I hope the seas across the Tasman are kind to you. Cheers Denise

  6. What absolutely beautiful photos. The orange sky is breathtaking… The water edge… Gorgeous! The close up of the moon… I love it!
