Chicken Parmigiana at the Hotel Bondi

Our Famous Chicken Parmigiana*

Crumbed chicken breast topped with Napoli Sauce and melted Mozzerella cheese.  Served with a fresh garden salad chips.

Hotel Bondi, Bondi Beach

Better late than never.  While staying in Sydney a couple of weeks ago, Dean and I stayed at the Hotel Bondi – a lovely little spot directly across from Bondi Beach – and, on our first night, we dined in their bistro.

As it turned out, the meals we had were so good, not only did we send compliments back to the chef, but we didn’t even bother finding somewhere else to eat on our second night.

* The meal I ordered was the $10 special, only available Monday to Thursday, and (naturally), as our second night was Monday, I had to find out how a $10 Chicken Parmigiana stacks up.

The schnitzel was breast meat and tender.  I have to say though, it was rather thin and the crumb fell away from the meat, yet even though I didn’t expect too much for $10, it tasted amazing and not just because I was hungry.

Even with the meat as thin as it was, it was still too much for me to eat and I donated some to Dean.

The sauce was tasty enough and there was not too much of it.  The inclusion of a few fresh herbs sprinkled over the top of the cheese added a new level of flavour and this was refreshing.

I would have appreciated the cheese being melted for a little longer and cannot even say the meal was pushed out quickly because the bistro was busy – it wasn’t.  Dean and I and two other couples were the only patrons there at the time.

The salad was fresh and tasty, but only consisted of lettuce leaves, red onion, and some dressing.  There was no other vegetable in the salad, but all in all, I still thought acceptable for $10.

The chips were amazing.  Fresh and lightly dusted with salt.  As is my custom, I moved the schnitzel off the chips to ensure they remained fresh and crisp, which they did.

Rating Overall

I gave this Chicken Parmigiana 6.3/10 but I’ve elevated it to 7/10 overall because although it wasn’t the best parmigiana I’ve ever had, it was a generous meal and so much more than what I expected considering the budget price.  It did have lots of potential, and I know I’ve been very generous with my rating.

For my final words on this parmigiana, here are the answers to a few questions I asked myself before writing this review:

Would the $18 (standard menu) Chicken Parmigiana have been better?
I think it would have had a more generous piece of chicken, perhaps had either ham (or bacon) included with the sauce and cheese topping, and I’d like to think it would have been served with a more substantial salad.

Was the meal more than you expected?
Yes it was, and the plate contained more food than I could eat.

Was the meal delicious?
Very much so.

Was this $10 Chicken Parmigiana worth it?

Would you buy it again?

So there you have it.  Not a show stopper, not the best there is, but certainly a great meal for $10.  Don’t forget to check out where this $10 Chicken Parmigiana sits in relation to other, more expensive meals, on My Parmigiana Richter Scale.

  1. I know someone who loves Chicken Parmigiana! Can you guess who? YOU! I enjoy it as well but actually love eggplant parmigiana. I love your chicken parmigiana ratings!

    1. Chicken Parmigiana is such a favoured pub grub meal here in Australia that my friends asked me to rate them as we travel around. I haven’t had one for quite some time now, but I think that’s about to change 🙂
