Our Canvas After Cabernet

As promised yesterday, the masterpieces Dean and I created last night are below.

Just to set the record straight though, Dean drank beer (but that’s ok), and I had a few glasses of a wonderful Hardy Brothers Cabernet Merlot – naturally!  How does one enjoy Cabernet & Canvas without the primary ingredient?

The artwork we were recreating was After the Rain – an original painting by Ella Dent, the owner of Cabernet & Canvas.  (You can click here to see the original artwork.)  Our evening was wonderful and made even more so by the instruction from Ella herself.  This was a huge bonus considering the website calendar indicated another artist was taking the class.

What a delight it was to meet Ella and follow along as she recreated her own painting right before our eyes.

We only hope our versions do her original justice.

After the Rain – A Recreation by Dean

I love what Dean did with the flowers and the detail in his red landscape.

After the Rain – A Recreation by Clare

I particularly love what I did with the tree and Ella did also (cue the big head), and after all the wildflowers we’ve seen on our travels, I know I went a little haywire with them, but it works for me.

. . .

Dean was apprehensive about attending and originally thought he would return with a canvas destined to be recycled in one way or another.  But as the evening progressed (and the beer and wine flowed), his thoughts changed somewhat and today, like me, he’s more than happy for his canvas to hang on a wall somewhere when we get home.

No wallflower at the best of times, Dean revelled in being the only male at a table of 12, but was pining for a little AC/DC when Ella put her music on and neglected to hit shuffle.  Suddenly ABBA hits filled the room with one or two ladies mumbling along.  It didn’t stay that way for long though as, “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do” started playing and the entire room joined in – with lots of giggles and not one missed lyric among us.

It was the perfect ending to a wonderful evening as we added the finishing touches to our canvases.

Ella (could have asked): Do you like what you’ve done with your painting?

The Class (would have answered): I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do.

  1. OMW!!! I LOVE this idea! Did you have anything to eat with the wine? We’ve been to wine pairing dinners, but this is a whole other critter. I wish I could find someone around here to start a business like this. Tell me more about it, please? Pretty please? Your paintings are wonderful! How exciting to be able to hang them side by side. I just think this whole thing is smashing.

    1. We really enjoy ourselves, the whole experience was wonderful. For lot’s of info about the evening, have a look at Ella’s website: http://www.cabernetandcanvas.com.au/

We were provided a voucher to buy wine (or food), were provided all the materials – including an apron. Then just followed along for 3 1/2 hours of instruction, and walked away with two masterpieces to hang with pride.
