Dean and I have seen Crested Terns everywhere. As a matter of fact, according to Birdlife.org.au – ‘There are few stretches of the Australian coastline where the Crested Tern cannot be seen.’
Also know as the Bass Straits Tern and the Torres Straits Tern, it wasn’t until we reached Hervey Bay in Queensland, a mere 3½ hour drive from home, that we actually saw some juveniles.
These two were ‘fishing’ for some lunch off the pier and were not aware I’d snuck up on them.
Never seen one before… so now I have!

They are quite prolific around Australia with only a few places where they cannot be found. The adults look quite funny ‘punky’ feathers on their heads.

They are so cute, especially when you know their spotty plumage means they’re teenagers.
