The Great Bat Reveal

On April 17, 2018, I introduced you to My Black Bat Flower and when I followed that up with an update in Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bat, I said I could hardly wait for my bat to emerge.  This has finally happened and I have not only one bat to adore, I have two.

This is ‘the’ most amazing plant I have in my garden at the moment, and I show it off to everyone and, much to my delight, they ooh and aah over it like it’s a newborn.  I guess in some way it is, with the first umbel still not quite fully opened.

Here is the latest series of shots detailing the amazing opening process.  Some shots were taken with my iPhone, others with my DSLR.

April 26 and the bracts begin to open
April 27 with the bracts open, the filaments emerged
May 1 – The flowers begin to bloom and the second umbel starts to open
May 4, almost there, just a few flowers left unopened
May 4, No 2 opens
May 6 – Wow! How gorgeous is this?

The rest of these photos were taken today – May 6 (2018).

It’s easy to see why this plant is called the bat flower plant.

Can you see the brats resemblence to a bat in flight?

Photographed from behind

I can, and I’m ecstatic that I have two umbels opened.

Each day they look more stunning than they did the day before.

Bat No 2

Though No 2 has a little catching up to do, it’s not too far behind No 1.

Those petals on No 2 are still tinged with green, but I imagine that colouring will fade and adopt that gorgeous velvety maroon.  At least I believe it will as I’m sure No 1 did just that over the last week.

I feel so special and delighted, that I am the owner of this amazing plant.

    1. Thanx Tina, it is rather spectacular and most people haven’t heard of it before. I must admit, I only came across it myself a couple of years ago.
