Four years ago, we spent our first Christmas on the road (see Emerald Beach), celebrating quietly by ourselves as we embarked on a trip of a lifetime travelling around Australia.
It was weird, to say the least, being away from what we called home, not sharing Christmas with our girls, and being away from our friends. But at least we were able to dress up our mini home and invoke the Christmas Spirit to make the season bright. I’d packed some lights, but didn’t pack any decorations, nor did I even consider what I could do about having a Christmas tree.
But as luck would have it, I wished, and the universe delivered. As we walked through the main shopping area of Grafton in early December, I spotted a tree for sale (on a stand outside a store) and said to Dean “That’s perfect for our mini home!” It was/is a battery operated, LED, colour changing, 26 cm tree (10.2 inches) and it was perfect.
I thought I’d not have a tree that year, in fact, I was finding it very hard to get into the spirit of Christmas, but this little ($20) gem brightened my spirits and made all the difference. (Believe it or not.)
I still have those pine cones, gum nuts, and shells I collected to decorate it with and I still have those battery operated lights too.

Here’s a closer look at the tree with our three angels watching over it – and us.

And I still have the other little tree as well, and its battery is still working – not bad for a $2 item from a junk shop.
