Being a Lunatic (As Usual)

The Moon looked amazing last night.

In the northern hemisphere, December’s Full Moon is referred to as the Cold Moon due to the frigid conditions as winter sets in.

But here in the southern hemisphere, December’s Full Moon is referred to as the Strawberry Moon, the Honey Moon, or the Rose Moon. I like the sound of all of those names. The Moon was looking golden last night, with a rosy, almost pink tinge.

But this was only for a short time. As soon as it was high enough in the sky, it was bright white and glowing beautifully as usual.

When the Moon rises tonight, unlike a Super Moon that’s a perigee – the closest point in its orbit of the Earth – it will be at apogee, the furthest point away from the Earth in its orbit making it a Micro Moon, or Mini Moon.

Two things happen here:

• Beause a Micro Moon is further away, it appears approximately 14% smaller than a Super Moon; and
• The illuminated area appears 30% smaller, which in turn, might make it look a little less bright.

I didn’t think that was the case last night, and I’m sure I won’t think that’s the case tonight either.
