Being a Lunatic (As Usual)

The Moon looked amazing last night.

Captured at 7:10 pm, December 18, 2021, 99% illumination.

In the northern hemisphere, December’s Full Moon is referred to as the Cold Moon due to the frigid conditions as winter sets in.

But here in the southern hemisphere, December’s Full Moon is referred to as the Strawberry Moon, the Honey Moon, or the Rose Moon. I like the sound of all of those names. The Moon was looking golden last night, with a rosy, almost pink tinge.

But this was only for a short time. As soon as it was high enough in the sky, it was bright white and glowing beautifully as usual.

When the Moon rises tonight, unlike a Super Moon that’s a perigee – the closest point in its orbit of the Earth – it will be at apogee, the furthest point away from the Earth in its orbit making it a Micro Moon, or Mini Moon.

Two things happen here:

  • Beause a Micro Moon is further away, it appears approximately 14% smaller than a Super Moon; and
  • The illuminated area appears 30% smaller, which in turn, might make it look a little less bright.

I didn’t think that was the case last night, and I’m sure I won’t think that’s the case tonight either.

  1. The moon was brilliant last night here in Tumbarumba NSW, the sky was clear after huge storms ripped through the area and the moon shone bright. Lovely photo and interesting information. #Sundaystills

  3. Wow, Clare, a stunning moon! I’m a bit of a lunatic, or cosmos geek, myself. Wonderful photography! So I read that here in the northern hemi, the winter full moon will appear full from this past Friday through Monday here. I read it on google so it must be true, LOL! By the way, your moon “lighting the night” is perfect for my weekly Sunday Stills Challenge, if you’re so inclined this week.

    1. Thanx Terri, I am so inclined and I love the fact that, from our perspective, and with the naked eye, the Moon looks full for a day (sometimes more) either side of when it’s ‘technically’ full. I adore the Moon and it’s nice to meet another Selenophile πŸŒ•

    1. That’s so lovely, Yvette πŸ₯° I just love photographing the Moon regardless of its phase, but I (mostly) love taking shots of it when it’s full. Enjoy the view tonight πŸŒ• it will be as spectacular as it always is.
