The Moon and Jupiter, and Me

Sometimes I can’t sleep. It’s a sad state of affairs but it is what it is.

Sometimes I can get back to sleep, but sometimes I can’t so I get out of bed.

And then there are those times when I get out of bed AND I step outside to gaze at the night sky.

This morning was one of those occasions, and (although I’m not the best person to be taking photos of the stars, or the planets) this morning I tried to capture what I saw.

The Moon and Jupiter.

Yeah, know it’s blurry.

But while I stood there, I also saw that Mars was visible too.

Yeah, still blurry.

And while I was photographing the Moon and Jupiter – ok, trying to photograph them – I also photographed the Moon. (Because I had to.)

This is a much better photograph.

(Perhaps I should stick to photographing the Moon.)

I do love being a lunatic.

I have to say it’s cold this morning. Colder than it was yesterday morning. But as our winter solstice came and went yesterday, astronomically marking the beginning of longer days and shorter nights, warmer weather is on its way – even if it will (and in most cases, does) get colder before it gets warmer.

The weather forecaster on our local news broadcast was kind enough to proclaim that today (June 22) will have precisely 1 second more sunlight than yesterday. WOW!

Thankfully, the incorporation of additional sunlight does increase at a rapid pace.

Today, the sunrise is at 6:35 am. But in six months’ time, the Sun will rise at 4:48 am and I can personally attest to first light being around 4:15 am given there are no curtains on our (slightly) south-east facing bedroom window.

I love watching the seasons change. Do you?
